Next-gen mid-size SUV teased in first images, revealing bold design and screen-laden cabin. The next-generation 2022 Kia Sportage mid-size SUV has been teased for the first time, ahead of its full reveal in July 2021, and an Australian launch by the end of 2021.
A trio of darkened teaser images released by Kia provide our first glimpse at the new Sportage design free of camouflage, confirming the bold front fascia with stylised LED daytime-running lights first previewed in spy shots and artist renderings in recent months.
The new model adopts a sportier, bolder design than that of its predecessor, with rear wheel arches highlighted by a sharp crease, and a pair of high-set LED tail-lights at the rear with C-shaped signatures, connected across the tailgate by a piece of trim.
Inside, a large curved panel stretches across much of the dashboard, likely combining a digital instrument cluster and central infotainment touchscreen into one unit – a similar setup to that employed by the brand’s new EV6 electric SUV, revealed earlier this year.
Kia’s new logo sits in the centre of the steering wheel, joining other interior features including multi-colour ambient LED lighting, multi-zone climate control, and aluminium trim elements.
Set to go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October to December inclusive), the new Kia Sportage is all but confirmed to share its underpinning with the new Hyundai Tucson medium SUV, launched in Australia in recent months.
Expect a range of petrol and diesel engines to be offered in Australia – with a range of RAV4 Hybrid-rivalling hybrid and plug-in hybrid options also on the cards – alongside an array of advanced active safety technologies, including semi-autonomous driving functionality on motorways.
Spy photos indicate a choice of two wheelbase options will be offered globally, mirroring its Hyundai twin – though it’s unclear whether Australia would only receive the longer of the pair, as per the new Tucson Down Under.
Further details of the 2022 Kia Sportage’s design will be announced on 8 June 2021, ahead of its full reveal in July 2021.
